Trupa post-grunge/pop-punk de pe Coasta de Est – Good Charlotte nu s-a deosebit foarte mult de trupe similare precum alternativii de la Blink 182 sau Third Eye Blind, insa tinerii din Waldorf au reusit sa aduca un aer proaspat pe scena muzicala americana.

Vocalistul Joel Madden si fratele sau geaman – chitaristul Benji nu mai cantasera in viata lor la un instrument pana in 1995 cand au luat parte la un concert Beastie Boys din cadrul turneului Ill Comunication.

Au format la scurt timp Good Charlotte impreuna cu Paul Thomas (bass) si Aaron Escolopio (tobe). Mai tarziu va fi inclus in trupa si chitaristul Billy Martin. Cu totii aveau o pasiune pentru elementele pline de energie desprinse din punk-rock-ul anilor `70, insa si pentru baladele clasice rock.

Rapid, Good Charlotte si-au creat un nume in statul Maryland, dar si in imprejurimi, cantand in cadrul mai multor festivaluri (HFS Festival s.a.). In 2000, apare albumul de debut ce le poarta numele.

Escolopio paraseste grupul in favoarea celor de la Wakefield. El este inlocuit cu Josh Freese, iar mai apoi cu Chris Wilson. In toamna lui 2002, Good Charlotte erau pregatiti sa prezinte publicului LP-ul `The Young and the Hopeless`, iar single-uri precum `Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous` si `Anthem` au catapultat trupa in mainstream, discul fiind triplu premiat cu platina anul urmator.

In 2004, revin cu `The Chronicles of Life and Death`, care desi a atins pozitia a 3-a in topurile billboard, nu a mai inregistrat vanzari la fel de spectaculoase ca precedentul material. Wilson paraseste trupa in vara lui 2005, invocand motive de sanatate, alaturandu-se mai tarziu celor de la Summer Obsession.

Dean Butterworth (care a mai colaborat printre altii si cu Morrissey) i-a luat locul la timp pentru a incepe inregistrarile celui de al 4-lea album al grupului. `Good Morning Revival` apare in martie 2007, anticipat de single-ul `River` (feat. M. Shadows si Synyster Gates de la Avenged Sevenhold).
